Short Writing and Struggling to Read

June is the beginning of a new quarter, and therefore new projects I'm taking on, new things to consider, and new ideas to sort through. I'll be hoenst, my reset weeks this year wasn't the most resetting - I didn't get as much reading and research done as I would have liked. I ended up doing alot more of the resting side than normal. But clearly I needed it.

Anyway, let's get to dicussing some of the fun stuff I've been having on the docket for this month.

What I'm Writing

In case you missed it, I've started a substack under the Incidental Mythology name. So far, I've been sharing the free posts also on this newsletter, but there will be some paid for reflective posts here and there. If you prefer getting that stuff there, go ahead. If you prefer not getting these posts on this newsletter, let me know that, too!

But basically, I've been busy thinking about and writing these posts. Most of the ideas I've had are ones I've either written about from different perspectives, or reflections on stuff I've done. I'll occasionally do long form essays - I got one coming up on Taylor Swift and Folklore. These are probably going to be more in the realm of considering larger projects. But anyway, I'm enjoying brainstomring and writing these up.

On the fiction side - I should probably start thinking of seperating these out for something new, like under my pen name or something - I'm going to be working on a new short story. I've been challenging myself to work on a short story every quarter, which means hopefully I'll finish the year off with four nice short stories I can pretty up and then start querying. Sneak peak for this next one (as the first vlog of this won't be out til the end of this month) - this next one is going to be formatted like a nonfiction essay, complete with both fake and real citations. I'm kinda excited about it.

What I'm Reading

Well, I hate to admit this, but I've been struggling to find time to read nonfiction stuff. I am tempted to lie to you all and pretend that I'm super capable of balancing all these projecting and still manage to do fun nonfiction reading - but, alas, I don't even know what I would lie with. I need to really think about my schedule and figure it all out. We'll get there.

But, I am looking at some new resarch projects which will hopefully help. My essay on Taylor Swift and folklore which is coming up has encouraged me to do a whole book on Taylor Swift Mythology, which I'm actually getting kind of excited about. So hopefully these new projects and new timeframes to work on them means that I'll have more to chat about later.

What I'm Enjoying

Well, I'm sad to say it's still Love Island season. I'm watching both Love Island USA and Love Island UK, along with several recap podcasts. It's a good practice of longform anthropological study through a reality show, but boy does it also take up so much of my time. And then I wonder why I don't have time to read! I'll be out soon, I promise.

But in the more drama sphere, my husband and I have been catching up on the White Lotus. We're currently only a few episodes into season three. I have a lot of thoughts about plotting and the slow build of suspense through low stakes drama. But I think that's something for a different time, especially as it simulatenously congratulates the show and criticises it. But I am enjoying it.

And that's it for this week! Sorry for the lack of reading suggestions, but that's just what it is right now. Have fun in the meantime, send me your suggestions, and in the meantime, as always, be good to one another!

September greets us with my first pumpkin spice latte of the season, a cooler breeze on the air, and an array of new pop culture enjoyment. The last month has been filled with a lovely amount of writing, some nice academic research that is re-invigorating this tired soul, and some new pop culture fads that I both loved to watch as well as to analyse. So, let's get into it! What I'm Writing I typically like to have my video essays for the Incidental Mythology YouTube channel finished about a...

August's passing means that autumn is on the horizon, though it's not quite here yet. The last few months have been very enlightening for me personally. I've had to put several projects on the back burner, brought forward quite a few, and made a lot of progress on things I didn't think I'd even start by now. Sometimes, you just need to make some adjustments to see what's needed in your life, I think. Space away has given me a good amount of time to really think and reconsider. I'll give some...

August. The death rattle of summer is hitting hard, with more heat waves as I hoard ice and try and figure out how to cook without heating up the kitchen. But that's what the weather's doing. For me, personally, things have been shifting, though perhaps for the better. Projects have been put aside, and I'm focusing on far fewer things than I typically do. And, who knew, the creative juices are having a better time flowing when I don't force myself to constantly be moving. Alright, so let's...
