Pokemon and the Gothic

Hello everyone, and welcome to a chill catch up of some fun stuff for March! This year, so far, has been quite full for me. The world is worlding, my research is researching, and I’ve got some big news coming down the pipeline from my own personal life that I can’t wait to share at some point soon. Hopefully it’ll be soon. Sometimes it does feel like shouting through a burning fire that I just published a book, with the state of things at times. But I hope that my updates and the things I publish can at least make someone somewhere feel a little lighter, even if only during the time of reading.
Anyway, let’s get into some stuff that I’ve been doing!
What I’m Writing
Still going strong on the substack. I’m really proud of myself for being able to consistently publish there every single Tuesday since it launched. I may not be able to always do that, but I hope to do it for as long as I can, and as much as I can.
Its actually been kinda nice to have something consistently to write. When doing a project like the Mythology and Taylor Swift project, there’s a lot of research and not a lot of writing, and so it’s nice to have an excuse to really flex my writing muscle so I don’t atrophy in the meantime.
Also, I’ve started a new thing over on the substack. I’ll occasionally be doing small anthropological studies of reality television shows. I always like to say that reality television is a nice microscopic study in anthropology or sociology. So, I decided to actually show you what I mean! I’ve put out one on Love Island so far, and have another lined up on Love is Blind. I’ll be gathering some more ideas, but open for suggestions if you have anything you want to see.
I will admit, I have been thinking about fiction again, and dabbling some more. Fiction has been a fun little dalliance, and one I would like to eventually make more than a dalliance, but maybe in the future. Maybe.
What I’m Reading
I’m still working through the Gothic literature study. For those interested, I’m doing a year long reading/research into the Gothic genre. I know it’s not directly related to any project I’m working on, but more knowledge is always good, no matter what. I have slipped a little behind, but we’re working on it! I promise!
next to read! The Monk by Matthew Lewis
For more academic stuff, I’ve been dabbling in all sorts of little pockets of fun things as a way to gather more material, or at least scope out possibilities of fun things, for the Taylor Swift project. For example, yesterday, I was doing some reading on conspiracy theories! Maybe next month I’ll have some recommendations for you.
For fiction stuff, the new Dresden Files book is currently on my bedside table. I’m probably about a good third of the way through. It’s still Dresden, still good, still loving it.
What I'm Enjoying
So… Pokopia came out.
Holy shit this game is good. There’s so much to it! I’ve probably played for about 20 hours or so and feel like I’ve only just started to get a flow for the whole thing. It’s a wonderful replacement for Animal Crossing. As a cosy game fanatic, this is the best. Just absolute best. Highly suggest. The characters are so well written, and its normally something I actually look for in cosy games. Most of the time, the “interact with the community” aspect I kinda just gloss over and listen to podcasts. But I actually enjoy talking to the pokemon in the game. Its just all around fun.
Anyway, that’s it for this month! Thanks so much for following and engaging. I’ll be back at the end of the month with a content and output round up. Until then, be good to one another!
Today marks the end of March, and 2026 continues its onward trudge. March also is the end of my first quarter, and - as you’re reading this - I’m currently on my reset weeks. I’ve talked about this a bit on my vlogs, but I always take two weeks between quarters to catch up on life and house admin, consult where I’m at in terms of my writing projects, and plan a nice approach for the next quarter. And, you know, if I play some Pokopia in the meantime, then I guess that’s just what it is....
2026 is plodding on, and it’s been raining almost consistently throughout since January. The skies have been gray and the ground wet all year so far. The gardens I normally walk through on strolls are all flooded. Most of Salisbury is fully underwater - some of which is planned for with the flood plains, and some of which is not. Looking ahead today before writing this, and it looks like I get a whole two days without rain coming up (woohoo!) but hopefully that means there will be a reprieve...
Well, it’s time for another check in regarding my slow progression in my Mythology and Taylor Swift project. Despite what feels like, sometimes, to be a snail’s pace, I have to remember that I did only pull the trigger in October, so it’s only been four months. Research is slow going. Which is always a little frustrating sometimes - I wish I could leave a day’s worth of work and have more than just a page of notes on something I may not even end up writing about in the end product. Research...
